Educators for Excellence-Los Angeles Celebrates the Settlement Agreement between United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)

January 22 (Los Angeles) — Educators for Excellence–Los Angeles (E4E-Los Angeles), a teacher-led organization, celebrated this morning’s announcement that the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) have reached a tentative settlement agreement.

“After being on the picket line for six days and almost two years of negotiation, I’m thrilled to return to my classroom to be back with my students,” said Misti Kemmer, a fourth-grade teacher from Russell Elementary in Los Angeles and member of E4E-Los Angeles. “I am glad to see that the union and the district came to an agreement that addresses the priorities of our students.”

“Having seen our teachers and students endure deep, painful cuts to much-needed staffing and programs, we are pleased to see the district and teachers’ union come together to settle on a tentative agreement that aims to be student-centered, fair for teachers, and financially feasible for the district,” said Ama Nyamekye, Executive Director of E4E-Los Angeles. “We are encouraged to see that the contract will provide support for teachers and students by investing in additional resources in critical support staff. Our teachers look forward to partnering with the district, union and broader community to ensure that the resources are equitably distributed so that our most vulnerable schools and students receive the most support.”
