Educators for Excellence-Connecticut Reacts to Governor Lamont’s New Budget Proposal

Educators for Excellence-Connecticut (E4E-Connecticut), a teacher-led organization, today reacted to Governor Lamont moving $150 million dollars from ECS to other parts of his budget.

“We are incredibly disappointed in the governor’s most recent budget proposal which takes funds away from the $150 million won for K-12 education during last year’s legislative session,” said Daniel Pearson, Executive Director of Educators for Excellence – Connecticut. “With this proposal, Governor Lamont is neglecting the promises and commitments made to schools last year in regards to increasing money for the ECS formula. At a time when the ESSER funds are running out and the teaching shortage is at an all-time high, taking a victory lap for himself and his own budget is a disgrace.”

“Districts have been facing fiscal constraints for years, and organizations have been advocating for additional funding since before 2017,” continued Pearson. “Our students and educators have gone through so much over the past few years, and the ESSER funds brought hope to many high needs districts. The legislation’s promise to fund education last year was essential to the success of schools and students. Our districts and boards of education are already creating budgets with the commitment of money, and to say it isn’t going to happen is outrageous.”“We urge our legislative leaders to reject the governor’s proposal with regards to ECS funding,” added Pearson. “And we ask that House and Senate leadership stay committed to teachers and students and keep the $150 million for its intended purposes.”
