Something huge happened this morning — and it was in large part due to the work of E4E members!

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the only independent, bipartisan agency charged with advising the President and Congress on civil rights, released a major report this morning which examines how federal laws and policies are failing to protect students of color and students with disabilities from discrimination in school discipline practices.

Reading this report is worth your time — especially the letter to President Trump and Congressional leaders from the Commission’s Chair, Catherine Lhamon. Click here to check out the Commission’s report now.

The report includes numerous references to E4E members who:

  • Testified at the Commission’s hearing on school discipline;
  • Met directly with Secretary DeVos on protecting federal discipline guidance aimed at reducing discrimination in school discipline;
  • Shared real-life stories from their classrooms on how discrimination in discipline feeds the school-to-prison pipelines; and
  • Worked to create a ground-breaking national survey of America’s educators that found teachers overwhelmingly support restorative practices over punitive discipline.

Thank you to the thousands of educators who have worked alongside us to ensure that students remain in class, not cuffs.

Onward,
