Mark Franklin – 2024 Black History Month Educator Spotlight

Educators For Excellence •

Name: Mark Franklin

Role: Teacher

Why is it important to support Black educators in the classroom?

Because of the current gap in achievement among black students who are struggling with the fact that there are a lot of disparities in education with the lack of black educators, they don’t feel like they’re represented by educators who are like them, in this struggle, who can teach them with integrity.

How do you plan to celebrate Black History Month? (In your school, family traditions, self-exploration, and care, etc.)

My family will focus on and celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of their ancestors and others whose shoulders and legacies we stand on.

What is your favorite quote from a Black figure in history?

“Without struggle there can be no progress.” Frederick Douglas

Additional comments you would like to make around Black History Month?

It should be celebrated throughout the year, not just the shortest month of the year!
