E4E-New York Statement on New Proposals to Improve Financial Literacy
Marielys Divanne, Executive Director of Educators for Excellence–New York, issued the following statement in response to new proposals from Mayor Adams and the New York State Education Department prioritizing financial literacy education:
“Educators for Excellence–New York applauds the bold promises and steps taken by Mayor Adams and the New York State Education Department to prioritize financial literacy in 2025. The Mayor’s recent commitment to placing a financial literacy educator in each of the city’s school districts, alongside the New York State Education Department’s inclusion of a financial literacy instruction requirement in its 2025 Regulatory Agenda, directly aligns with what our educators have long been advocating for.
Hundreds of educators have signed our petition, urging state and city lawmakers to mandate the successful completion of a personal financial literacy course as a high school graduation requirement. Thousands of New Yorkers graduate each year without essential knowledge of critical financial tools—such as insurance, banking, credit, and investments—leaving them unprepared for the realities of adulthood. To amplify this need, our educators submitted a white paper to the Blue Ribbon Commission and authored essays calling for this critical shift.
We are encouraged to see that city and state leaders are responding to what educators are saying by ensuring financial literacy becomes a foundational component of education in our schools. We urge city and state leaders to turn these commitments into action and call on Governor Kathy Hochul and state legislators to support the New York State Education Department’s recommendations on graduation measures. Together, we can ensure that all students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive financially.”
