Educators for Excellence-NY Praises Blue Ribbon Commission’s Support for Financial Literacy, as Part of New Recommendations

Today, Marielys Divanne, Executive Director of Educators for Excellence-New York, expressed strong support for the New York State Blue Ribbon Commission’s recent graduation measure recommendations, particularly the endorsement of mandatory financial literacy instruction for all students in New York.

“We are grateful and encouraged by the Board of Regents and the State Education Department for their dedication to equitable education in New York. While we are still examining the full scope of the recommendations, we are encouraged to see support for integrating financial literacy as a critical component of high school education. As advocates for this essential educational reform, we believe it’s imperative for every high school student in New York State to be financially literate prior to graduation.

“Our educators witness daily the gaps in financial understanding among New York’s students. Each year, countless individuals graduate without crucial knowledge of basic financial concepts, due to the absence of a dedicated personal financial literacy course in our high school curriculum. This disparity needs to be addressed. Every student, regardless of their background or future aspirations, deserves to be educated about fundamental financial concepts such as insurance, banking, credit management, and investment principles.”

“We view this particular recommendation as a vital step towards achieving greater equity within our education system, that will ensure New York meets the needs of its diverse student population and prepares them for a successful future.”
