Educators for Excellence-New York Reacts to Reopening Plan

March 8 (New York) — Educators for Excellence-New York (E4E-New York), a teacher-led organization, reacted to New York City Public Schools’ updated reopening plan. 

“While this is yet another major change, I am grateful that more students will get the in-person learning they need to thrive,” said E4E-New York member Patrick Sprinkle, a high school social studies teacher at P.S. 412 NYC Lab High School For Collaborative Studies in Manhattan. “How can my students effectively learn about civics and citizenship while sitting alone in front of a screen? Moving forward I hope the City listens to educators to make in-person and remote learning safe and effective.”

“The more students safely in classrooms the better,” said Paula L. White, Executive Director of E4E-New York. “We’re thrilled the City is continuing what E4E teachers have asked for since the start of the school year – bringing students back safely over time, starting with those who need in-person learning the most. Yet, this plan will fail if policymakers don’t consult with teachers and students to ensure their needs are met, whether students are learning in or out of the classroom. This plan will succeed if our leaders learn from their past mistakes, and engage – not ignore – the people they are meant to serve.”
