Educators for Excellence Names Marielys Divanne Executive Director of New York City Chapter

May 1, 2023 (New York) – Educators for Excellence-New York announced today that Marielys Divanne will begin duties, effective immediately, as the chapter’s executive director. Divanne has an extensive track record as a leader in New York City’s education and advocacy space, previously holding leadership roles in New York City as a Senior Advisor to the First Deputy Mayor, the Interim Executive Director of the Children’s Cabinet, and as the former Vice President of Education at the United Way of NYC.

Divanne also brings a background in grassroots advocacy, having served as the former National Organizing Director at OurTurn and the former Lead Organizer & Executive Director at a Metro IAF chapter in both Manhattan and the South Bronx, where she led the campaign that built the Mott Haven Schools Campus. She also previously consulted with SEIU 1199 to restructure their organizing and political teams.

“We are elated to have Marielys Divanne join our leadership team,” said Evan Stone, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Educators for Excellence. “Few individuals bring this combined track record in leadership, education policy, labor advocacy, and organizing to the table, so we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her driving our work in New York City moving forward.”

Divanne will be joining Educators for Excellence-New York at a pivotal time for educators, students, and parents. It is expected that city leadership will soon announce an end to the current free-for-all curricula selection process, a shift that Educators for Excellence-New York’s members have long advocated for.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Educators for Excellence at this pivotal time, because when we don’t invest in high quality curricular materials, our educators and students pay the price,” said Marielys Divanne, Executive Director of Educators for Excellence – New York. “The majority of educators say their curriculum is low-quality, and assessments in math and reading confirm as much, so I’m excited to join the fight for high quality instructional materials and aligned professional learning, at a time where our schools desperately need it.”

In her role as Executive Director, Divanne will lead E4E-New York’s more than 15,000 members, to ensure that the perspectives of New York City educators are reflected in the policies that impact classrooms, the teaching profession, and students.
