NYC educators push for teacher diversity in city schools

When Leton Hall was a public school student in the Bronx, he didn’t have a single teacher who looked like him.
Hall became a middle school science teacher in the Bronx in part so his students would never have that same experience. But for years, he was the only black male teacher on staff — which came with challenges of its own.
“Since there were a lot black students, if they had an issue they usually came to me, as if I could just connect because of having the same race or ethnicity,” Hall said.
