Changing the way teachers learn can make all the difference in the classroom

Daniel Gannon was thrilled when he got into a teaching master’s degree program at Iona College. He was especially excited to get his feet wet as a student teacher.

But the program, which placed him in a Westchester County school every day on top of his classes, turned into the equivalent of a full-time job and more. Gannon struggled to make ends meet, working nights at the admissions office to pay tuition.

“It’s all unpaid,” he said. “The expectation is you chose to be in this program, you have to figure out how to make it work. That stinks, you don’t want to hear that.”
