Statement on Likely Executive Order Proposing Dissolution of U.S. Department of Education

The following is a statement from Educators for Excellence Co-Founder and CEO Evan Stone, following numerous reports on the Trump Administration’s likely Executive Order proposing the dissolution of the United States Department of Education:

“The U.S. Department of Education is a cornerstone of an equitable American K-12 public school system. It performs critical functions that would cease without alternatives in place: filling state-level funding gaps among districts, conducting research to identify and scale what works, and holding states accountable for delivering an excellent public education. Calling for the dissolution of the Department—on the heels of indisputable national data showing continued downward academic trends and widening achievement gaps—will do the very opposite of what the federal government’s role should be: supporting, incentivizing, and holding states and districts accountable for educating all our students.

“An Executive Order to dissolve the Department, like others released over the past several weeks, attempts to exert power beyond the reach of the executive branch. Instead of releasing Executive Orders that sow confusion and doubt while doing little to support our nation’s students, the federal government should be investing in what we know works for kids: high-quality instructional materials, aligned professional learning, equitable funding systems, transparent data systems, and strategic coupling of our best teachers with our students who need them the most. We must remain focused on reimagining our nation’s public education system–not dismantling it.”
