Statement on Resignation of Mayoral-Appointed School Board Members
Educators for Excellence-Chicago (E4E-Chicago) expresses our deep concern over the imminent resignation of the mayoral-appointed Chicago school board members, a troubling development in the ongoing turmoil within Chicago Public Schools (CPS) under Mayor Brandon Johnson.
This move is not only an affront to the integrity of CPS governance but is also reckless in the face of ongoing contract negotiations and a looming fiscal crisis. With a historic school board election less than five weeks away, the resignations destabilize the very leadership our students, families, and educators desperately need.
E4E-Chicago Executive Director Courtney Hrejsa said, “When leadership changes abruptly at such a critical time, it sends a message that our students are not the priority. Any major decisions should be paused until the school board elected by the people is seated in January.”
We are disappointed that politics have been pursued over the Mayor’s primary responsibility to serve student and family needs. We urge the Mayor to restore stability, beginning with retaining CPS CEO Pedro Martinez, focusing on our city’s educational needs, and maintaining a focus on student outcomes above political brinksmanship. Our kids deserve better.
