Statement On New NYC Education Cabinet: E4E-New York Applauds Steadfast Commitment to Reading and Math
Evan Stone, Co-Founder and CEO of Educators for Excellence-New York, issued the following statement in response to NYC Public Schools’ announced leadership changes:
“NYC Public Schools and Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced significant leadership changes today, including the departure of multiple top deputies and the unveiling of a new Education Department cabinet.
“The impact of the previous leadership team can’t be overstated. Through the launch of NYC Reads and NYC Solves, the city made historic investments in high-quality reading and math instruction, which have already delivered massive gains for students and have seen growing popularity among educators. As a result, New York City has emerged as a national leader in advancing transformational progress in reading and math.
“Importantly, the work begun by previous leadership is continuing. We’re especially encouraged that the baton is being handed to yet another strong group of leaders, including First Deputy Chancellor Danielle Giunta, who has been a leader in implementing NYC Reads and NYC Solves, and will be committed to improving these initiatives moving forward.
“We’re hopeful that this new leadership team will continue to center educators’ voices as these initiatives evolve. It’s rare to see, amid leadership changes and new mayoral administrations, such a focused and cohesive agenda for improving public education. That continuity speaks volumes about the impact and broad support behind these initiatives.
“We look forward to continuing to partner with this next chapter of NYC Public Schools leadership to build on this progress and ensure educators’ voices are at the forefront of the decisions that shape our classrooms.”
