Educators for Excellence Slams Latest Efforts to Dismantle U.S. Department of Education

Evan Stone, Co-Founder and CEO of Educators for Excellence (E4E), issued the following statement:

“Today’s announcement—that the U.S. Department of Education will further downsize and disperse key agency offices across other federal agencies—is the clearest example yet of this administration’s short-sighted disregard for the more than 50 million K–12 public school students who rely on a functioning federal backstop.

“By hollowing out the agency charged with protecting students’ rights and ensuring educational opportunity, this administration is effectively abandoning the federal government’s foundational responsibility in public education. The Department of Education exists to serve all children. Today’s latest affront sends a very clear message to our most underserved students: there will be no accountability, no guarantees, and no oversight to protect their rights and opportunities.

“It’s no surprise that the Trump administration’s education agenda is overwhelmingly unpopular with the people closest to classrooms. Fewer than 20% of teachers support any of the administration’s stated education priorities, and a majority of Americans oppose eliminating the Department of Education altogether. No one—teachers, parents, or the broader public—supports this attempt to undermine public education, yet President Trump and Secretary McMahon continue to pursue it anyway.

“The U.S. Department of Education needs leadership that listens to educators and is committed to strengthening and reimagining our nation’s approach to K–12 education, not dismantling it.”
