E4E-NY Congratulates Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani, Urges Continued Momentum on NYC Reads and NYC Solves
Evan Stone, Co-Founder and CEO of Educators for Excellence, issued the following statement:
“Educators for Excellence–New York (E4E-NY) congratulates Zohran Mamdani on his electoral victory. New York City’s students and educators deserve a more equitable and inclusive New York City, and we look forward to working with the Mayor-elect to build on the meaningful gains already underway in our schools.
“As he shapes his administration’s education agenda, we urge Mayor-elect Mamdani to cement New York City as a national model of literacy and math instruction by sustaining and strengthening NYC Reads and NYC Solves. Thanks to the tireless collaboration of city leaders, the UFT, educators, parents and families, and community advocates, these transformative initiatives demonstrate what’s possible when leaders listen to educators and invest in evidence-based instruction. State test scores show reading proficiency rising seven points and math proficiency climbing three. Local screener data revealed 2.5-point gains in reading, particularly for our youngest learners and students with disabilities. Educator surveys from last school year also show growing confidence and strong support for these shifts.
“It is extremely rare to see gains of this magnitude this early in a systemwide shift like NYC Reads and NYC Solves, particularly across grade levels, among our youngest learners, and for students with disabilities. New Yorkers should be proud, and now is the moment to double down on this work in partnership with students, educators, and families.
“Teachers support these policies and have voiced clear areas for improvement. Given the Mayor-elect’s commitment to engaging with key stakeholders, we are optimistic that he will continue to improve NYC Reads and NYC Solves based on the feedback of teachers. We look forward to working with him and his administration to do so.”
