Black History Month 2025 | E4E-CT Educator Spotlight

1. Name: Shakira Perez

2. Role: English Language Arts Teacher

3. E4E-Chapter: Connecticut

4. Why is it important in 2025 to support Black educators in the classroom?

The first TED talk I ever watched was by Rita Pierson, a  Black teacher from Texas. Her message, “every child deserves a champion” has resonated with me over the years. It affirms that yes, every child deserves an adult in their life that will not give up on them; however, as a Black and Brown child, having a black and brown teacher makes an impressive difference. When a student has an adult that looks like them and connects to them (other than their family), that student will thrive. This is why it is important to support Black teachers in the classroom so they can keep pouring into the lives of all children, especially Black and Brown children.

5. Who is a Black figure who has inspired you?

Oprah Winfrey. I admire her appreciation for the teaching profession and her love for reading.

6. What is your favorite quote from a Black figure in history?

“I will be changed by many things, but I will not be reduced.” – Dr. Maya Angelou
