Statement from Jonathan Schleifer, Executive Director of Educators 4 Excellence-New York, on Mayor Bloomberg's budget proposal

"The Mayor's budget is further evidence of the urgent need for a teacher evaluation system in New York City. Not only are teachers losing out on the feedback and support they need to do their jobs well, they're now faced with unnecessary layoffs and students are losing countless resources they need to learn. With the union and mayor returning to the table, we hope they can move beyond their differences and work together to save our classrooms from further harm. However, if they can't find the political will here in the city then we hope Governor Cuomo will step in and provide leadership on this issue."

For far too long, education policy has been created without a critical voice at the table – the voice of classroom teachers. Educators 4 Excellence (E4E), a teacher-led organization, is changing this dynamic by placing the voices of teachers at the forefront of the conversations that shape our classrooms and careers. With a quickly growing national network of more than 7,000 educators united by the E4E Declaration of Teachers’ Principles and Beliefs, E4E teachers can learn about education policy and research, network at E4E’s event series with like-minded colleagues and important education policymakers, and take action by advocating for teacher-created policy recommendations that lift student achievement and the teaching profession.  For more information, please visit www.educators4excellence.org.
