Educators for Excellence-Minnesota Congratulates Mary Cathryn Ricker on Appointment to Education Commissioner
December 20 (St. Paul) — Educators for Excellence-Minnesota (E4E-Minnesota), a teacher-led organization, congratulates Mary Cathryn Ricker on her appointment to Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education.
"This appointment gives me hope that this administration is serious about elevating teacher voices and teacher leadership, and I look forward to working with Mary Cathryn to improve outcomes for students,” said E4E-Minnesota member Casey Metcalfe, middle school social studies teacher at Sanford Middle School in Minneapolis Public Schools. “My peers and I hope she will prioritize the most vulnerable students across our state, especially those who are being pushed into the school-to-prison pipeline because of overly-punitive, discriminatory discipline practices.”
“We congratulate Mary Cathryn Ricker, a former nationally board certified educator who has demonstrated she is an innovative leader,” said Shannon Mitchell, Interim Executive Director of E4E-Minnesota. “As the president of the St. Paul Federation of Teachers, she led a transparent, inclusive bargaining process that brought together teachers, parents, students and other stakeholders to make progress on issues that impact our classroom. As Executive Vice President of the American Federation of Teachers, she focused on teacher-driven solutions for professional development and school governance. Given our state’s stark achievement gaps, we look forward to partnering on efforts underway to diversify the teacher workforce and move away from exclusionary discipline measures that disproportionately target students of color.”
