Local teachers union officials say the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that public employees who are not union members do not have to pay so-called agency fees, or dues, is a blow to public sector workers across America.
“Look at the teacher strikes that occurred this past spring, that will become the norm across our country,” Gary Peluchette, president of the Bridgeport Education Association said of the 5-4 ruling handed out Wednesday.
The much anticipated case, some fear, could permanently handicap the power of public unions, including teachers unions, even though most teachers are card-carrying union members.
