DEVOS HOSTS SCHOOL SAFETY AND CLIMATE SUMMIT THIS WEEK: The Education secretary is planning to meet with advocacy groups, educators and parents on Wednesday to discuss school safety and Obama-era discipline guidance that the department is considering rescinding.
One group meeting with DeVos, Educators for Excellence, is planning to urge the secretary to protect the guidance. “It is a critical role that the federal government plays to investigate and make sure that racial disparities in discipline are addressed,” said CEO Evan Stone, who will join six educators at a roundtable with DeVos. “These educators are not blind to schools and districts that are trying to game the numbers without changing how they address behavior. But it’s important we continue on a path towards equity. They are really concerned that without this guidance the momentum will slow or stop.”
