How states should invest in teachers

The Every Student Succeeds Act—the current rewrite of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)—has the potential to elevate teaching and promote teacher leadership, with the right guidance on how to strategically recruit and retain teachers.

Last fall, teachers across the United States convened through an E4E Teacher Action Team to share their priorities for the reauthorization of ESEA, including a call to elevate teaching and promote teacher leadership. The team brought recommendations both to legislators on the Hill and the U.S. Department of Education. Following the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act, members of the team are now writing to request that the education department create guidance for states to utilize Title II funds to address our goal of using ESSA to elevate teaching and to promote teacher leadership.
