Urge Minnesota Lawmakers: Fully Fund the READ Act!

Last year, the READ Act was passed to address a critical issue in Minnesota: fewer than 30% of 8th graders are proficient in reading. This legislation mandates science-based literacy instruction, a crucial step toward improving educational outcomes.

However, implementing this mandate comes with high costs. Schools must invest in professional development for educators and purchase new, high-quality curricula. Without substantial state support, the READ Act’s goals are at risk.

A newly proposed education finance bill offers a solution—allocating over $33 million to support the rollout of the READ Act, with $31.37 million dedicated specifically to robust teacher training. E4E members and activists fought hard last year for passage of the READ Act – fully funding teacher professional development and curriculum is a necessary next step.

Therefore, we urge Representative Cheryl Youakim and Senator Mary K. Kunesh, chairs of the Minnesota House and Senate Education Finance Committees, to continue championing this cause and fully fund the READ Act by supporting this education finance bill.

To bridge gaps caused by decades of neglecting evidenced-based instruction, comprehensive training in the science of reading is crucial. Educators must be supported in delivering the new curriculum, which requires properly funded teacher training and professional learning.

That’s why we need Chair Youakim and Chair Kunesh to continue their relentless fight to get this done, and all Conference Committee members must get this right and ensure the $35 million funding for professional development and curriculum acquisition is included in this legislative session.

Investing in our educators and curricula is crucial, not just for our schools but for the future of every Minnesota student. Let’s ensure our young learners receive the high-quality education they deserve by fully funding and implementing the READ Act.
