Jamie grew up in Atlanta with family emphasizing the importance of doing well in school. Having attended public schools through her K-12 education, Jamie grew close with teachers Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Pepper while in high school, which prompted her to get an undergraduate degree in social science education from the University of Georgia.
After receiving her degree, she taught social studies and was also a softball coach at South Cobb High School in Austell, Georgia. While at South Cobb, Jamie became passionate about student engagement, equity issues, school climate and teacher professionalism. These interests lead her to New York for the Teachers College, Columbia University, where she was able to dive deeper into understanding issues and policies impacting her students.
