Ciara grew up outside Chicago as the daughter of a teacher in a family of educators. She attended Northwestern University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science and international studies. She began her education career as a fourth-grade bilingual inclusion teacher in the South Bronx because she wanted to foster a lifelong love of learning in her students, just as teachers had done for her. While teaching, she earned a master’s degree in bilingual education.
Frustrated by the many education policies that undermined, rather than supported her students’ learning, Ciara began working in the New York State legislature to better understand the policymaking process. She returned to the Midwest in 2010, where she earned a master’s degree in public policy with a focus in education policy and politics. Before coming to Educators for Excellence, Ciara served in policy and communications positions in an Illinois House campaign, the Wisconsin State Senate, the education policy nonprofit Advance Illinois and Chicago Public Schools.
Ciara believes that the key to improving education outcomes for students is to leverage the experience and expertise of the teachers who work with them every day. As national director of communications at E4E, she enjoys working with teachers to ensure their voices are heard by fellow educators, policymakers and education stakeholders across the country.
