Our nation’s education system is leaving millions of students—including an overwhelming number of students of color and low-income students—unprepared for college, career, and life. While research shows that classroom teachers are the single most important in-school factor in improving student achievement, their diverse voices are consistently left out of education policy decisions. For far too long, teachers have been treated as subjects of change rather than as agents of change.
Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence is a growing movement of 34,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. We work together to identify issues that impact our schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to a quality education.
What We Do
Our Theory of Change is grounded in two long-term goals that are inextricably linked: better outcomes for our students and the elevation of the quality and prestige of the teaching profession. We achieve these goals by changing policy at the district, state, and federal levels and transforming our teachers’ union to be more student-focused, democratic, diverse, and anti-racist. United around our Declaration of Teachers’ Principles and Beliefs, we are building a powerful movement to lead this change by:
- Organizing educators who share a common vision of equity and excellence in schools,
- Training and supporting teacher leadership, and
- Advocating for teacher-led recommendations at all levels of government, within teachers’ unions, and in the public conversation around education.
Educators for Excellence envisions an equitable and excellent education system that provides all students the opportunity to succeed and elevates the teaching profession.
E4E organizes anti-racist, student focused educators, builds their leadership capabilities and collective power through issue based advocacy campaigns, and supports them to take on positions of leadership in their schools, districts, and most importantly, in their unions. Over our 10-year history, we have made incredible progress organizing teachers to take action to uplift their students and profession. Through E4E, tens of thousands of educators have signed on to a common vision for elevating the teaching profession and improving student outcomes; thousands of teacher members have successfully advocated for and won equity and excellence focused policy changes in their local communities; and hundreds have trained for and taken on positions of elected and appointed leadership in their schools, districts, and unions.
In the coming years, E4E’s programming must build on this momentum while pivoting to meet the moment of dramatic crisis facing our students and teachers. We will be guided by the urgent goal of shaping policy solutions to help students, particularly low-income students and students of color, recover from a year of interrupted and unfinished learning, health and social emotional crises, and unrelenting racial trauma. We will do this by organizing and uplifting the collective voices of anti-racist, progressive educators, recognizing they have also faced significant personal and professional challenges to overcome. We know that our work is more urgent and important than ever during this unprecedented moment in our nation's education history, and as a result we are making strategic investments in our leadership team, infrastructure, and program model to continue to accelerate our efficacy and impact.
Educators for Excellence’s Growth team is seeking a Chief Growth Officer (CGO) to lead all aspects of the organization’s comprehensive fundraising program that provides the resources for E4E to execute on our mission, while exploring innovations that will support E4E’s long-term growth and sustainability. The CGO will leverage their exceptional communication, strategy, and relationship-building skills--as well as a commitment to our core values and strong people management skills--to take a highly functioning development operation to the next level. The CGO’s legacy at E4E will be one of transformation at all levels, from overseeing the evolution of our 10 person Growth team to leading on the creation of an expanded and diversified revenue strategy and launching potential new site expansion and growth models in partnership with our Board and Co-CEOs.
With chapters currently operating in Los Angeles, New York, Connecticut, Chicago, Boston, and Minnesota, E4E’s organizing culture is grounded in our passion for impacting educational change at the systems level and revolves around an innovative, roll-up-your-sleeves spirit backed by a shared commitment to continuous professional growth.
Scope: What is the nature of the role?
Reporting to the Co-CEO, the CGO will serve as a key member of the organization’s Executive Team and lead a fundraising team charged with raising at least $11.5 million in FY22 and incrementally increasing annual revenue in subsequent years while developing and executing a plan for innovative revenue and expansion strategies. Key responsibilities for the new CGO will include:
Growth Strategy and Execution:
- Co-design E4E's vision for growth (of business and impact) with the Co-CEOs and Executive Team; own the evolution and activation of the vision and growth strategy.
- Identify innovative ways to grow and diversify partnerships and revenue.
- Measure and analyze current revenue streams and relationships to optimize our annual fundraising year over year.
- Lead strategic initiatives for sustainable growth of the organization, including exploration of alternate revenue-generation strategies outside of philanthropy.
- Improve E4E’s development systems and architecture to position the organization for future sustainability and growth.
- Keep abreast of trends in the national education landscape and education philanthropy, and contribute to strategic enterprise-level decision-making.
- Pursue new and diversified donor funding opportunities to support E4E’s growth.
- Cultivate and strengthen partnerships with national and regional foundations, individual major donors, and corporations.
- Play a key role, both internally and externally, in representing the organization and liaising with key stakeholders including donors, members, staff, and the Board of Directors.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Set and model high standards of development outputs.
- Lead, inspire, and develop E4E's growth and development team.
- Coach and support local executive directors who serve as regional front-line fundraisers.
- Identify, coach, and develop talent within the development team.
- Set and ensure achievement of goals and highest standard of performance.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a diverse, inclusive, solutions-oriented, high-trust team and organizational culture.
Enterprise Leadership and Organizational Strategy:
- Serve as a member of the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams, providing input and making decisions on issues of org-wide magnitude
- Participate in the budget development process and maintain a high level of fiscal responsibility
- Implement E4E’s strategic plan as approved by the Board of Directors, and in collaboration with the rest of the Executive Team, as well as developing and implementing new initiatives that serve the organization’s mission
- Set and steward the organization's strategic direction both nationally and in each of our chapters; including helping to shape E4E’s next strategic plan and developing a comprehensive fundraising impact plan for the organization
- Champion E4E’s mission, Core Values, and Commitment to Anti-Racism, both inside and outside the organization
- Actively embody anti-racist practices in all aspects of their work, and push the organization to continue to grow and improve within these values by modeling a strong and inclusive culture for their team and the streams of work they manage
Qualifications & Requirements:
- 10+ years of professional experience, including deep expertise in donor strategy and best practices, experience designing organization-wide fundraising plans, strategizing and engaging a diverse range of constituents (including major donors, foundations, corporations, and prospects), and leading the full range of activities within the development function as both a strategist and as the person who delivers results.
- Experience building a sustainable, comprehensive development program in a matrixed organizational environment with multiple critical stakeholders.
- Successful track record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from individual and institutional donors at the level of six to seven-figures or greater.
- Experience with capital campaigns and/or earned revenue streams preferred.
- Passion and commitment to E4E’s mission; experience working on issues relevant to our work; experience working in a policy/advocacy/systems-change organization highly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree recommended in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, community development, public policy, or related field.
- Outstanding presentation and communication skills and experience as a compelling spokesperson, relationship builder, and fundraiser.
- Ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor strategy and process.
- Comfort and fluency with SalesForce, G-suite, Slack, and presentation formats like Powerpoint.
Transportation: Often works out of the office (or home office), with ~20% travel (currently virtual due to Covid-19)
- Time will be divided between office meetings with staff within the organization and meeting with potential donors.
- Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings for fundraising and programmatic events and other priorities.
- Must be willing to work long hours to reach fundraising deadlines.
- Must be willing to travel to meet with staff and potential donors across the country.

- Broad knowledge of all functional areas of fundraising (e.g. major giving; corporate and foundation giving; annual and individual giving; stewardship; development operations).
- Experience with prospect discovery and building effective strategies to compel new major donor investment.
- Demonstrated past experience planning and executing integrated, strategic, and innovative communications in support of achieving fundraising goals.
- Working knowledge of contemporary data management practices and innovations that can streamline the development process and contribute to the integration of related functions.
- A forward thinker with a track record of utilizing new methods of donor engagement and connectivity, who will be driven by innovation in developing philanthropic best practices in the current and post-COVID-19 world.
